Does anyone out there watch Nip/Tuck?
I'm an addict of the show and, while I admit that this third season is not nearly as good as the first two, so far, there are still reasons to tune in.
SPOILERS... YOU ARE WARNED.
For example, I'm digging on the addition of Quentin Costa (Bruno Campos) as a new partner in McNamara/Troy. This past week's episode, in which we discover Quentin's bisexuality as he grabs Christian's (Julian McMahon) ass during a four-person orgy with Kimber (Kelly Carlson) and Kit (Rhona Mitra), is just classic. Listening to Christian and Sean (Dylan Walsh) cracking jokes about their "uncomfortable" experiences with Quentin toward the end of the episode and seeing Quentin walk in and effectively blackmail them into silence without actually blackmailing them should prove to be interesting twist in future episodes.
And you wonder why this is only on extended cable (FX).
But the real reason I keep watching is because I am totally enthralled by the Carver subplot.
For those who aren't watching and do want to know what I'm talking about, the Carver is a serial slicer. This is a person whose identity is unknown but runs around in a chinadoll mask and black outfit and literally carves Joker-like smiles across the faces of people. For the most part, the victims have been females who the Carver considers to be excessively beautiful. There was one male victim, too, if I recall correctly. Very few have actually been killed as the Carver wants them to live with their scars of ugliness.
In response to these attacks, Sean made the goodwill gesture of fixing those attacked by the Carver, gratis. Even when warned off by the Carver, Sean continued his crusade. Then the Carver attacked him. Quentin and Christian fixed Sean's face and Sean continues to do his work.
However, at the end of last season, when Sean was preparing himself for another visit from the Carver, our knife ace showed up at Christian's place and, as per his M.O., paralyzed him with an injection, sliced his neck, "violated" him in a very uncomfortable place, and left him for dead. This violation left our lothario unwilling and unable to perform with his favorite female counterpart, Kimber, or with any other female for that matter.
Enter the detective investigating the case, Kit, who not only is trying her best to find the Carver, but has amazingly returned our Romeo to his woman-loving ways by seducing Kimber and performing a series of rehabilitative menage a trois (how do you pluralize that one? I don't speak French.).
My theory can be found by clicking on the post continuation...
Okay, my theory is in regards to the identity of the Carver.
This may have been brought up on message boards for Nip/Tuck but I wouldn't know as I don't read them.
Let's recap the facts as we know them...
- The Carver uses some kind of drug to keep victims paralyzed but completely awake and aware during their attacks. In my mind, not only does this allow the Carver the perfect stillness necessary to make the cuts that he makes, but it also can give the Carver an advantage should he not be strong enough to subdue the victims physically.
- There have been very few attacks on males. Mostly just females. Except the one guy (a model, as I recall) and then Sean and Christian because of their involvement in trying to fix those who have been attacked.
- Christian is the first one to have been sexually violated.
- We have never really been given any sort of clue as to the physical stature of the Carver because we have never seen him right up next to someone whose size we have some sort of impression about. Usually, the Carver attacks those who are asleep or lying in bed.
- When Kit arrived on the scene, the attacks stopped.
Using these facts and inferences, I believe that we can go back and change all my pronoun references to the Carver from the masculine to the feminine. I think Kit (Rhona Mitra) is the Carver. Before you laugh yourselves silly, hear me out.
- A paralyzing drug is being used to keep the Carver from needing to employ brute strength to subdue victims.
- Kit has been proven to take a liking to females, but will also sleep with males as evidenced by her three-way relationship with Kimber and Christian. Maybe she has been scorned by both sexes and now takes out her anger on these "beautiful people" in a proportional manner (more attacks on women than on men).
- During her sexual escapades with Kimber and Christian, we see that Kit is a very dominating person. She likes to dictate what will happen, when it will happen, and where it will happen. Christian even admits to his frustration in the relationship due to his inability to determine where he stands as it seems the primary action is between Kit and Kimber. Kit has even said her goal is to empower Kimber against male sexual oppression. Maybe ruining this relationship is yet another way for her to get back at Christian for his involvement in Sean's "crusade."
- Yes, Christian was sexually violated during his attack, but do we know the details? He wasn't looking at the Carver as the attack happened. He was laying face down on his bed for obvious accessibility reasons. He did look back before the violation actually occurred just to confirm that what he feared really was about to happen. We don't know if the Carver used a strap-on or if it was real. Christian has professed his intimate knowledge of a female vagina and how he knows by feel during sex whether it's real or not (he admitted to as much in this past week's episode in regard to Ava (Famke Janssen)). But his likelihood of knowing whether it was a real or fake penis that penetrated him is highly unlikely.
- We don't really know how big the Carver is. Could be male, could be female. We have no visual point of reference for height determination and the Carver wears a black outfit in scenes that are shrouded in shadow (attacks that have been seen on screen have all occurred at night) which keeps us from being able to tell how muscular he/she is.
- Like I said, when Kit arrived on the scene, there were no more attacks. Her hatred was quelched temporarily. Until, that is, Christian and Kimber "broke up" with her in the last episode. Now, in the preview for next week's episode, we are told that another Carver attack has occurred. Hmm...
- And, really, who better to know how to get away with these crimes than a cop who investigates them on a regular basis? Insider knowledge always yields greater success rates. Until they get cocky and sloppy, which I feel is going to happen sooner rather than later.
Or is all this just too darned obvious for it to be a likely solution?

Oh, and thanks to Niptuckfans.com for the image of the Carver which I adapted from one of their user-uploaded collages.
